The Dutch first arrived at the Cape of Good
Hope at the southern tip of Africa in 1652. The
Cape, was inhabited with a remarkably youthful
and vibrant people called the Khoisan who lived
along the magnificent shores.
So beautiful were the Khoisan women that
many of the Dutch men were distracted by their
beauty. When the Dutch settlers later brought
their wives and families to the Cape, the wives
were fascinated by the beauty of the Khoisan
women.
It did not take long for the Dutch women to
start wondering why, in such harsh climatic
conditions, the Khoisan women were so
beautiful, with skins light brown in complexion
and flawless, with a vibrant youthful beauty
far less than their years.
It was not until Madelaine De Wetshof
befriended a Khoisan woman, Tungelie that this
closely guarded secret was revealed. This is
the legend of the Khoisan
beauty.
The
LegendOn the West Coast of South
Africa there is a legend of the Khoisan people
that tells of the princess of a local tribe
living on the shoreline thousands of years
ago.
Princess Ixhloni was so beautiful it was said
that the sun shone brighter whenever it saw her
dancing by the sea, as she so often did. She
cared for her people and had a natural talent
for growing healing plants and creating the
potions which kept all members of the tribe
youthful and healthy.
One evening, as she gathered mussels in the
shallows, she noticed an incredibly handsome
young man watching her from the rocks nearby.
She swam over to greet the stranger, and
instantly fell deeply in love with him. They
met in secret on that remote shoreline for many
months, until one night, unable any longer to
avoid Ixhloni’s questions, the young man
confessed that he was really an immortal, a
spirit of the sea.
Bitterly angry at how he had tricked her,
Ixhloni told him to go away and never return,
and she fled back to her village. Weeping, she
told her father everything. He advised her that
though it may seem as if people from such
different worlds can have no future together,
with love there is always a way.
The next day she regretted her hateful words,
but it was too late. She walked the shoreline,
searched the rocks, and swam in the shallows.
But he was gone. She returned to their meeting
place every evening, hoping that he might
appear. Each night she swam further and further
out from the shore, growing increasingly
distraught. One night, when the moon was full,
she did not return.
The people from her village searched for her in
vain. Over time, without her healing skills,
ill health and aging started to beset the
villagers. Then one day they noticed something
new out beyond the wave-line, just below the
surface of the sea. Those with enough courage
and curiosity swam out to investigate. They
returned with stories of a wonderful sea plant,
anchored to the ocean floor and extending all
the way up to the sunlight. In among its
fronds, where the sunbeams flickered, some said
that they had seen Ixhloni. She was
dancing.
The seaweed embodied her spirit and healing
powers, and it returned her people to health,
keeping them ageless and beautiful. It’s
elegant waving fronds would forever remind them
of the loveliness, energy and caring of their
lost princess.
That seaweed is still growing beneath the
waters of Kommetjie to this day. It is called
Ecklonia Maxima.
The Secret
RediscoveredNot until recent times
has the secret within Ecklonia Maxima been
rediscovered and scientifically validated.
This incredible seaweed has the highest
concentration in any plant life of a complex
chain of carbohydrates called fucoidans, a
potent natural moisturizer. Ecklonia Maxima’s
serum is almost identical to human plasma,
allowing your skin to absorb it easily. And it
is an incredibly rich source of all the
minerals, vitamins, and trace elements
necessary for the nourishment of your skin.
