Epidermis

The epidermis is the outer part of your skin that you can see.

epidermis

The thickness of the epidermis varies in different types of skin. It is the thinnest on the eyelids at .05 mm and the thickest on the palms and soles at 1.5 mm.

Your epidermis is hard at work. At the bottom of the epidermis, new skin cells are forming. When they are ready, the new cells start moving toward the top of your epidermis. This journey takes about 2 weeks to a month. As newer cells continue to move up, older cells near the top die and rise to the surface of your skin.

The old top cells are tough and strong, perfect for covering and protecting your body. But they last a short while and soon they flake off. In fact every minute of the day we lose about 6-7 million dead skin cells off the surface of our skin.

Most of the cells in your epidermis (95%) work to make new skin cells. The other 5% make a substance called melanin which gives skin its color. The darker your skin is, the more melanin you have. When you go out into the sun, your cells make extra melanin to protect you from getting burned by the sun's ultraviolet, or UV, rays. That's why your skin gets tanned if you spend time in the sun.

There are three types of specialized cells in the epidermis:

  • The melanocyte produces pigment (melanin)
  • The Langerhans' cell is the frontline defense of the immune system in the skin
  • The Merkel's cell's function is not clearly known

DID YOU KNOW?

Your skin measures about 1 mm thick when you’re born, and grows to about 2 mm thick by adulthood.

As we age, skin gradually thins and becomes more sensitive to sun damage.

The process of producing healthy new skin cells and removing or shedding old cells takes about 28 days.

The epidermis is constantly growing from the bottom upwards and the dead skin cells are shed from the surface about every 52-75 days in normal skins. It can be much quicker in some skin diseases such as psoriasis.

Skin is thickest on the palms & soles (1.2mm to 4.7mm) and thinnest on the lips and around the eyes. Facial skin is approximately 0.12mm thick and on the body is about 0.6mm.

As you age , your skin becomes thinner and often drier.

SKIN CARE TIPS

Even though melanin in your skin works to protect you from the sun, you should always wear sunscreen and protective clothing. In this way you can protect your skin from potential skin cancer.

Because there is a constant action of cells dying and regenerating in the skin, the more nutrients the cells receive, the longer they will take to degenerate, and the more youthful your appearance will be. This is why the skin needs a deeply penetrating moisturizer to nourish the cells where they divide and form.

The skin should be exfoliated at regular intervals to help remove dead skin cells from the surface in order for your skin to have that radiant look. An effective moisturizer will assist nature to keep your skin hydrated and can help stimulate new cell growth.
